1. Slow-Release Superfood
The Claim: Wool pellets provide a full season of nutrition. The Science: Wool contains keratin protein. As soil microbes break down the wool over 6 months, they release a steady stream of Nitrogen (N) and Potassium (K). Unlike synthetic fertilizers, there is zero risk of "root burn." Your plants get a consistent "drip-feed" of nutrients. In a heavy rainstorm, synthetic nitrogen washes away into the groundwater; wool pellet nitrogen stays trapped in the fibers until the plant actually needs it.
The N-P-K Breakdown
While exact numbers vary slightly based on the sheep's diet and the amount of "coat grease" (lanolin) left on the wool, the standard analysis for wool pellets is:

Wool Pellet Application Guide
For best results, always water thoroughly after the initial application. This "activates" the wool, causing the pellets to swell and begin their slow-release process.
In the Garden (New Beds & Rows)
Application Rate: Use 1 lb per 10–15 square feet of garden space.
Method: Broadcast the pellets over your soil and till or rake them into the top 3–6 inches.
Transplants: Drop a small handful (approx. 1/4 cup) directly into the planting hole before placing the seedling. This puts the water-holding capacity right where the roots need it.
Pots & Containers
Standard Mixing: Mix 1/2 cup of pellets per gallon of soil (about a 2–5% ratio by volume).
Existing Pots: Spread 1/2 cup over the soil surface and gently poke them 1–2 inches deep with a pencil or finger to ensure they are covered by soil.
Natural Pest Barrier (Slugs & Snails)
The "Wool Ring": Create a solid circle of pellets roughly 6 inches wide around the base of vulnerable plants like hostas or lettuce.
Note: For pest control, keep the pellets on the surface. For fertilizer benefits, they work best when buried or mixed into the soil.
Important Notes
What to Avoid: Wool pellets have a slightly alkaline pH ($7.0–8.8$). Avoid using them in large quantities around acid-loving plants like Blueberries, Azaleas, and Hydrangeas.
Longevity: One application typically lasts an entire growing season (approx. 6 months) before completely biodegrading into the soil.
