Like a spider we weave a web, each strand connected to another. We connect the farmer who looks for weed suppression using weed mats made of wool, the researcher who is intrigued by the possibilities of germinating seed in a mat made of natural fibers, the artist who manipulates the fiber properties to create a piece, the businesses that will thrive using fiber resources and the communities that will be built on the strength of an interconnected web.
We are amazed by the properties of wool and the incredible possibilities that this provides. Some of its properties are well-established and serve the textile industry well. It is durable and elastic. Wool can keep you warm by trapping air in its fibers. It can also keep you cool by absorbing perspiration. Wool is naturally flame-resistant and doesn't melt or stick to other fibers when it burns. It is water-repellent and resistant to odor. Wool is 100% biodegradable and can release nutrients back into the soil during composting.
Raw wool straight from the sheep can be a fantastic fertilizer, provide pest protection, water retention, and weed control in the garden and farm. It can be used as a soil amendment and replace mined products like vermiculite and perlite in soil mixes. The use of wool in agriculture is the strand of the fiber web that we are spinning.
We are excited about all the possibilities, even the ones we don't know. We invite you to join us in our journey. We will consider all animal and plant fibers that fit our mission. Our newly formed non-profit Great Lakes Natural Fiber's first project will be the production of wool pellets. We are looking for people interested in participating as a wool producer, doing on-farm research, becoming members, contributing ideas, and supporting us in other ways.
